EPA EXEMPTS METHOPRENE FROM RESIDUE TOLERANCES IN FOOD COMMODITIES

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (July 15, 2003) – Effective June 11, 2003, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that methoprene is exempt from the requirement of a tolerance in or on all food commodities when used to control insect larvae. The EPA granted the exemption because a thorough risk analysis showed residue tolerances are not necessary to protect human health or the environment.

Methoprene has been granted a tolerance exemption for use as an insect larvicide on all food commodities based on the agency’s safety finding. The EPA concluded there is a reasonable certainty that aggregate exposure to residues of methoprene will not result in harm to the general population, infants and children and that methoprene can be used on all crop commodities.

Methoprene is a proven insect growth regulator that has helped provide effective pest control for more than 20 years. Earlier this year, Wellmark International introduced Pre-Strike, a new methoprene-based formulation to help stop the spread of West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses. Pre-Strike larvicide kills mosquito larvae before they can develop into breeding, biting adults. Pre-Strike is ideal for use around the home and garden anywhere standing water is found.

Methoprene also is the active ingredient in Altosid for professional mosquito control, Diacon II for stored product pests and Altosid IGR for control of horn flies in cattle.
